Freelance writing resources

Here are some useful resources about freelance writing.

All these links were tested early in 2012.

ASJA - The American Society of Journalists and Authors

The ASJA helps professional freelance writers advance their writing careers. Members share candid data on writing rates, publishing contracts, editors, agents and more. Non-members benefit from our Contracts Watch newsletter, annual writers conference and writing resources. Editors and others can search our membership to hire experienced authors and journalists.

CFU - Canadian Freelance Union

Over the past three decades, self-employed communications professionals have seen their real income plummet a whopping 66 percent... even as publishers demand virtually all rights to the work that freelancers create. The Canadian Freelance Union (CEP Local 2040) was created to help independent media workers deal with these growing inequities. If you work as a contractor in any media (print, radio, TV, web), join now.

For Copywriters Only

A great site packed with useful tips and techniques from experienced copywriter and author Steve Slaunwhite. Subscribe to his free e-newsletter for tips on finding your niche, getting clients, pricing your services, growing your freelance copywriting business and more.

International Freelancers Academy

Aimed at any type of freelancer, but certainly applies to freelance writers. This site is packed with tips, training videos, and encouragement. Jointly operated by Steve Slaunwhite, Pete Savage and Ed Gandia... all writers.

Paul Lima - Freelance Writer, Copywriter, Media Interview Trainer - Toronto

Based in Toronto, business writer and business writing trainer Paul Lima can deliver the right words, on time and on budget, or train your staff to write more effectively. Paul has been a professional writer and writing instructor for over 25 years. He offers companies and organizations a variety of writing and editing services, business writing training, writing e-courses and consulting services.

PWAC - Professional Writers Association of Canada

A professional association with more than 650 members that has protected the rights and careers of Canadian freelance writers since 1978. PWAC has local chapters in many cities. PWAC sponsors networking, professional development, lobbying, awards, and an annual conference.

The Well-Fed Writer

Where the words "starving" and "writer" are never seen together. Peter Bowerman is the author of the books "The Well-Fed Writer" and "TWFW: Back For Seconds", which are both how-to standards in the lucrative field of commercial freelancing... writing for businesses, large and small, and for hourly rates of $50 to $125+. Today he writes e-books and gives teleseminars on how to boost your income as a freelance commercial writer, aka copywriter, business writer, corporate writer, or marketing writer.
